Folliculitis

Folliculitis is characterized by inflammation and infection around hair follicles. The infections can be either bacterial or fungal but are most commonly bacterial. It presents as red, painful bumps or white-headed pimples around hair follicles. It is a very common disease, having more than 3 million cases per year in Kenya. Symptoms usually don’t last long, resolving within days to weeks. Some severe cases can result in hair loss and scarring.

Risk factors for folliculitis include shaving, wearing tight or restrictive clothing, having acne, using dirty hot tubs, etc. If your folliculitis is not resolving with normal care then antibacterial topical washes and creams may be necessary, and oral antibiotics in more severe cases. If large abscesses form from deep infection we may drain them in the office. For people who frequently get folliculitis from shaving, laser hair removal may be beneficial.
