Herpes Simplex Virus
Herpes simplex virus is categorized into 2 types, herpes simples virus type 1 (HSV-1) and herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2). HSV-1 causes painful lesions of the mouth, commonly referred to as cold sores or fever blisters. The other type, HSV-2 causes lesions of the genital and perianal regions, also known as genital herpes. It is important to point out that HSV-1 can be transmitted to the genitals through oral/genital contact. Many people afflicted with herpes report feeling embarrassed or ashamed by their condition.
The reality is that more than half of the global population is infected with HSV-1 or HSV-2, however most people never develop symptoms. Although there is no cure, this bothersome and oftentimes embarrassing condition is very manageable. At The Dermatology Clinic, we prioritize patient comfort and confidentiality. We offer a variety of oral and topical anti-viral and analgesic treatments that can significantly reduce the frequency and intensity of HSV-associated flare-ups as well as help prevent transmission of the virus to others.
